The Surprising Benefits of Caramel
Caramel, with its rich and buttery flavor, is often associated with indulgence and decadence. However, this sweet treat also offers surprising health benefits. Caramel is made by heating sugar, which undergoes a process called caramelization. During this process, antioxidants are formed, which have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and help protect against chronic diseases. Furthermore, caramel contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals, including calcium, potassium, and iron. These nutrients contribute to bone health, heart function, and oxygen transportation in the body. So, the next time you enjoy a caramel-flavored treat, you can feel good about nourishing your body with a dose of antioxidants and essential nutrients.
The Combination of Caramel and Coffee
Now, let's talk about the magical combination of caramel and coffee. When these two flavors come together, they create a symphony of taste that is both indulgent and satisfying. The smooth and creamy caramel perfectly complements the bold and robust flavors of coffee, resulting in a beverage that is truly a treat for the senses. But beyond the taste, the combination of caramel and coffee also offers unique health benefits. As mentioned earlier, coffee is rich in antioxidants and has been linked to numerous health benefits. When combined with caramel, these benefits are further enhanced, creating a drink that not only satisfies your sweet tooth but also nourishes your body. So, whether you prefer your caramel iced coffee hot or cold, you can enjoy the best of both worlds - a deliciously indulgent treat with added health benefits. |
How to make premium salted caramel iced coffee. This recipe is easy enough to make at home, but would also be right at home on your café menu!
Ingredients
- 200 grams of vanilla ice cream
- 50g espresso (2 shots!) Hint: We love this recipe with our DramaLlama blend
- 50 grams of milk
- 20g of dulce de leche (Dulce de leche, also known as caramelized milk, milk candy or milk jam in English, is a confection popular in Latin America prepared by slowly heating sugar and milk over a period of several hours)
- Pink sea salt
Method
-
The main prep here is Dulce De Leche, which can be made by placing an unlabeled can of sweetened condensed milk in a pot of boiling water. Reduce to a simmer for 2.5 hours, making sure to cover the can with water the entire time.
-
Use tongs to carefully remove the canister and place it on a cooling rack until room temperature. Do not open the can while it is hot because the contents are pressurized and will splatter if not completely cooled.
-
The end result is a rich, decadent caramel that you can keep in the fridge for weeks. Simply heat the parts you need! Or you can use caramel coffee powder from DramaLlama.
Add the ice cream, espresso and milk to the blender and blend until well combined. The texture should be almost thick in consistency.
-
Pour into a tall glass 300ml of salt, then using a spoon, drizzle the Dulce De Leche over the top.
- The result will be a rich, sweet iced coffee with a delicately balanced complexity that results in an empty cup quickly.
Notes
For a fun spin, try substituting dairy milk for almond milk for that "We just drank on a picnic!" feel.
